I choose to be a calvinist because I was predestined to become one.

Apparently the subject matter here is too serious to generate commentary... I agree with Janna... I think.

But wait a second. I think being a calvinist is a second-cause effect in your life, after you are elect. Read the WMCoF on that matter. Its pretty confusing at first, but you should read it anyway.

Discussion at last!

One can be predestined both to be elect and to be a Calvinist. There's no conflict there. Obviously election comes first, and Calvinism comes either shortly thereafter or some ways down the pike. Or not at all, in many cases.

Couldn't salvation and professed belief in what we call calvinism occur at the same time?

Mark used the term election, that happened before the foundation of the world and ought not be confused with the moment of actual salvation. I think these are two different events or at least it seems that way in scripture.

Whoops, I should've said salvation. No disagreement, just a poor choice of words.

Considering that I was predestined to make this comment, I might as well not even bother to make it. Oh wait, it's not going to make itself if I don't do it, isn't it. Gee, that's almost just like how salvation works. And in the end, it ended up happening anyway. Strange world we live in.

I say that when becomes a Christian they become a Calvinist and vice-a-verca.

Label or no labels....its by grace ye are saved!

Abrahams faith was counted unto him as rightiousness. By Faith!

Indeed, its is by grace we are given faith, and by faith are we saved.
(this comment is more better than my other one..)

So Nate, would you argue that anyone who subscribes to arminianism is not saved or do you argue that they're really calvinists but don't know it yet? It seems the latter is illogical. I agree that, if saved, they are saved by grace but that by default doesn't mean they subscribe to what we call calvinism.

I would say that what we call "Calvinism" is so blatantly obvious from the Bible that no Christian could possibly study the Bible, in faith and with the illumination of the Holy Ghost, and not see it. However, just that doesn't make you REFORMED. I would say that there's lots of true believers out there who are not REFORMED. My views on this matter roughly center around what can be found in The Sum of Saving Knowledge, courtesy of the Westminster Gods (Divines, whatever).
